Things You Need To Know This Week – November 12, 2016

This has been a very intense week for the United States, after election results concluded and Donald Trump was announced President-Elect on Tuesday. With his presidential win came a strong wave of emotions from around the country, by supporters and adversaries alike. As strong emotions surround us, now is a great time to turn our focus to our passions. For those whose passion includes marketing, content, and all things social media, let me share with you the latest edition of “Things You Need to Know This Week”.

Nearly one in five internet users worldwide, especially Millennials, now block ads, according to September 2016 research. While some may find this news discouraging, studies also show that they are not adverse to brand messaging. Via eMarketer.

Pinterest has given its ‘Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval’ to several companies who are now able to track ads’ performance and target ads using brands’ own data, similar to Facebook and Twitter. Via Marketing Land

Big changes are happening at Twitter as Chief Operating Officer, Adam Bain, is departing. Anthony Noto, current CFO, will be taking his position. This comes at a tumultuous time for the company, having just laid-off 9 percent of its workforce last month. Via Tech Crunch

LinkedIn users will now see ads in their mailboxes too. On Wednesday, LinkedIn announced that its Sponsored InMail is now open to any individual or business, regardless of size. This comes one day after Facebook announced its  plans to also offer sponsored messages via Facebook’s Messenger platform. I don’t know about you, but I groaned a little bit when I read this. Just what users want, ads in their inboxes or messaging apps. Via CNET

Internet users worldwide are seeing the benefits of Artificial Intelligence, according to a recent study by Weber Shandwick and KRC Research. As AI continues to develop, Internet users are seeing the advantages and are receptive to the benefits. Via eMarketer

Facebook might be a viable competitor to LinkedIn by offering job opening features. This is a pretty big deal and definitely something to watch. Facebook has confirmed that it is experimenting with a slew of recruiting features which would include allowing business pages to promote job listings. What makes this interesting is that this functionality could give LinkedIn a run for its money in the job posting category, which is what made LinkedIn the earliest social network to be profitable. People use LinkedIn because they have to to search for jobs, people use Facebook because they want to. This is a smart move on the part of Facebook and is well-timed, considering Microsoft’s $26.2 billion cash acquisition of LinkedIn expected to go through soon. Via TechCrunch

It’s Snapchat’s turn to copy Instagram. On Tuesday, Snapchat finally updated its Stories project, the one Instagram copied in August, with the ability to rewind stories. The update also included the addition of “World Lenses” which are meant to augment the reality around you, and the ability to share other people’s snaps through private messaging. Via Marketing Land

Facebook and LinkedIn Ads deliver the best ROI to B2B Social Marketers. According to September research from Regalix, more than two-thirds of businesses worldwide are devoting dollars to social media advertising. While many CMOs struggle to show the impact of social, Facebook and LinkedIn deliver the best results, which is a change from even last year, when LinkedIn was the clear leader. Via eMarketer

Spot fake iOS and Android apps this holiday season with these great tips from CNET. The New York Times and New York Post discovered hundreds of counterfeit apps in Apple’s App Store. It is important to stay vigilant while shopping by mobile and online. Via CNET
