How To Get Noticed By The “Right” Twitter Accounts?

Question: We are trying to garner more attention from the “Right” group of followers on Twitter. We recognize it isn’t just about numbers, but targeting. Any ideas on how we can get the right people/companies to follow us on Twitter?

I am really glad that your company is focusing on the right following as opposed to just big numbers.  The debate between volume and quality rages on in the social media community, but when it comes down to it Social Media is a function of marketing and marketing is responsible for creating customers.

With that, Twitter can be a great place to build customers, loyalty and revenue, but it isn’t easy. One of the biggest problems is getting the messages you share on Twitter seen by the appropriate audience. If you are a reseller of software then getting a local restaurant to follow you is only really important if that restaurant is a target for your product or can influence the decision of a company that is a target for your product. Make sense?

Therefore the key for companies trying to use Twitter to drive revenue is to connect with the right followers who can take actions on their products that drive the buyer’s journey.

To get noticed by potential followers I recommend the following strategies.

  • Create Fresh Content: What questions about your products and services do your target clients have? Use these as opportunities to write content and share the answers in your Tweets.  Providing answers to these questions will drive people with a need for your products and services to want to follow your account.
  • Curate Useful Content: With so much content out there, it is also important to find and share content on Twitter that your audience can benefit from that isn’t necessarily written by your company. People love to follow Twitter accounts that are comprehensive in providing resources on a topic. If your account is a thorough way for someone to get info on an industry or vertical market it makes it more follow worthy.
  • Be Proactive: I have found that by proactively following accounts that you want to earn a follow from is a great way to get noticed. It doesn’t always yield a follow back but it often gains notice and if you engage their activity they may just engage your activity in return.

There are many ways for companies to use Twitter to drive business, but without the right followers your content and social media efforts may yield very little which is not only frustrating, but a giant waste of time.
