At the end of the day you want your pinning activities to drive more traffic to your website, right? Without traffic, there’s no sale.
I often just see hashtags (BTW, please don’t use them on Pinterest. Leave that for Twitter and Instagram), or one-liners, or even just one word. How is that a pin description?
Have a look at this image below.
There are several areas where you need to add those SEO juice. One of them is in your pin descriptions.
You have a 500-character limit to work with.
The best descriptions:
- Inspire Pinners to do something
- Provide extra information so Pinners can figure out if the pin is right for them
They should mention the most compelling aspects of the pin and hint at what more there is to find if they click through your website.
- What is your image about; don’t be vague
- Offer tips, advice or instructions
- What problem does it solve?
- Add a call to action
According to Pinterest when you provide people with helpful information and instructions you get more clicks. Home Decor pins that offer a list, tips, or advice receive a 93% higher click through rate. DIY & Crafts receive a 49% higher save rate.
To make your life easy, I recommend you use a character count tool to see if you are within this range. http://www.lettercount.com/
By the way, over 80% of Pinterest users use their mobile device so you want to make sure that your most vital information (key words) is in your first 30 characters.
Certainly, there are images that are so obvious that you don’t need a description, but for the most part you want to make sure that you are providing Pinners with a clear description garnished with your highest performing keywords.
Generally speaking, adding more helpful details and descriptions means more opportunities for your pin to show up in the search results.
There you have it; you have just learned the winning formula for optimizing your pin descriptions to help you get found which leads to potentially more sales.
