And there’s no shame in admitting that you kinda sorta think you know what SEO is all about, and why it matters, but that there’s probably more you could—and maybe should—learn. If that describes you, this video, featuring Google’s head of web spam Matt Cutts, might be just what you need.
How Does The Google Work, Anyway?
In the below video, Cutts explains everything from how The Google (you know you laugh when I call it that) crawls, indexes and ranks sites and their content. He then dives into how PageRank is used and how Google crawls through timelines, looks at frequencies and priorities and indexes and filters within their databases. Nerdy stuff, to be sure, but important to understand if you want to get a glimpse of why it’s important for your business to have an effective online presence.
What’s Google’s Goal?
Google’s overall goal is really pretty simple.
- Crawl the web
- Index those web pages
- Rank and serve those pages in the order that makes the most sense
An even simpler way to look at it: Index all the content on the web, deliver the needles in the haystack to searchers. At the speed of light. Isn’t that what we’re all looking for? Methinks so.
Let’s Get to The Video
So go ahead, check it out. Cutts is engaging and personable and it’s no surprise that he has legions of fans. And while someone mentioned in the video comments that the video is a few months old, the fact that it was just recently published and already has garnered almost 200,000 views tells us that this is a topic that many people are more than a little interested in.
You can read the full transcript of the video covered by Search Engine Land’s Barry Schwartz if you’d like to know more.
